Keep your classroom library accountable

When students borrow from a leveled classroom library, a simple paper trail prevents favorites from disappearing. This checkout grid mirrors what school librarians log electronically—title, who took it, when it left, when it should return—without requiring apps or logins. Slip the cut card into a library pocket glued inside the cover, or staple it to a manila envelope of sets.

Teaching students to use it

Model writing legible first names and the date every time. Younger grades can stamp the week number instead of full dates. Add a classroom rule: no new checkout until the previous line shows a return checkmark—teaches responsibility without shame.

When to graduate to software

If your collection grows past a few hundred volumes or you share books across classrooms, consider a barcode system later. Until then, printable cards cost almost nothing and survive offline days when Wi-Fi fails.
