What is 田字格 (tian zi ge)?

Tian zi ge is a square practice cell used in China (and widely for kanji in Japan) with a vertical and horizontal midline forming four quadrants. Learners align strokes relative to center and corners so characters stay balanced. 米字格 (“rice” grid) adds diagonals — useful when teachers emphasize stroke angles and symmetry.

Choosing box size

Younger students or new learners often use larger boxes (18–22 mm) for pencil control; smaller boxes suit compact homework or advanced review. The generator packs as many full cells as fit inside your margins and centers any leftover space.

Classroom ideas

  • Stroke-order drills: one character per box for the first week; later, two smaller words per page section once box size is reduced.
  • Radical hunt: students circle the same component in different 田字格 cells to connect meaning and shape.
  • 米字格 weeks: turn diagonals on when introducing slanted strokes (撇, 捺) so beginners see mirror symmetry across the center.
  • Print A3 or legal for demo sheets at the board; learners use A4 copies at their desks.

Hanzi, kanji, and other square scripts

The same grid supports simplified and traditional Chinese practice and is widely reused for Japanese kanji (often alongside hiragana practice on separate lined sheets). It is not tailored to Korean hangul boxes or Arabic connected script — for Arabic proportion lines, use Arabic calligraphy grid paper.

Printing tips

Vector PDF output keeps outer cell borders and inner guides sharp when photocopied. If cells look crowded, increase margins or switch to landscape before shrinking box size — empty space around the grid reduces visual clutter for younger writers.
