Paper crowns and party hats are the most-used last-minute craft of the year — birthday parties, half-birthdays, school plays, Christmas paper-cracker tradition (in the UK / Commonwealth), and New Year's eve. The three styles cover the situations: a birthday zigzag crown (the gold paper crown from a Burger King kids' meal — universally recognized), a classic cone party hat (the pointed cardboard hat with chin elastic), and a pointed princess crown (taller and more decorative — three-point tiara silhouette with a centre heart and jewel circles).

Head sizing matters and is usually the part everyone forgets. Average child head circumference is around 52 cm (20½ in); average adultis around 57 cm (22½ in).
