Why compare with symbols?
Writing <, >, or = forces students to decide whether two values are equal or which is larger — the same decision tree behind ordering lists, bar-chart questions, and number-line placement. Mixing in equal pairs occasionally checks that students read for equality instead of always picking “greater.”
Modes
- Whole numbers suit early elementary and quick warm-ups; blanks are wide enough for a handwritten symbol.
- One decimal adds place-value attention (compare tenths before ones, etc.) without the length of full money problems.
Next steps
Move to rounding and decimals once comparisons feel automatic. For word-based inequality phrases, combine with mixed operations story problems later in the year.
