What is a notary journal?

A notary journal (notary log book) is a chronological record of notarial acts — typically the date and time, type of act (acknowledgment, jurat, oath, copy certification), document type, signer name, identification presented, fee charged, and any notes or thumbprints required by your state.

Many US states require commissioned notaries to keep a sequential journal. Exact columns and retention rules vary by state — this printable is a recordkeeping template, not legal advice. If your commission handbook mandates extra fields (for example a right-thumbprint column in California), use the Notes / thumb space or add a second line in that cell.

How to use this printable

1. Fill the header with your name, commission number, state, and book/page reference.
2. Enter one row per notarial act the same day — do not leave blank gaps in the sequence.
3. Under ID type / #, record the ID kind (DL, passport, etc.) and enough of the number your state requires (full, last four, or “personally known” as allowed).
4. Download the PDF, print at 100% / Actual size, and keep completed sheets in a bound or locked file.
