Why use a number line?
A number line turns operations into motion: addition moves to the right, subtraction to the left. That matches how thermometers, timelines, and elevation models work — one dimension, two directions. Young learners often solve 5 + 3 faster on a line than with only abstract symbols because the distance is visible.
How this sheet is set up
- Each problem shows tick marks and labels from 0 through a span that fits the answer so students can count hops without redrawing the line.
- Subtractionuses minuends large enough that the subtrahend is clearly to the left of the starting point when modeled as "take away" along the line.
- Mixed mode mixes both operation types so students read the symbol every line.
